The ECOSF in collaboration with the Union of Iranian Societies of Mathematical Sciences (UIMS), organized a virtual Lecture as part of their Lecture Series on Popularizing Mathematics and Science on January 23, 2024. The distinguished Dutch Professor of the History of Mathematics, Prof. Jan P. Hogendijk, Utrecht University, Netherlands was the esteemed speaker for the event.
Prof. Hogendijk's lecture focused on exploring the intricate patterns engraved on Islamic astrolabe plates, particularly those from the school of Allahdad. The lecture presented modern geometric concepts to introduce these astrolabe patterns as orthogonal pencils of coaxial circles. The lecture aimed to delve into the mathematical concepts and techniques employed by Islamic astrolabe makers in engraving these captivating patterns.
The event successfully blended historical perspectives with contemporary mathematical insights, leaving the audience with a heightened appreciation for the art and science behind Islamic astrolabes. In the end, Prof. Hogendijk addressed several questions and answers from the audience.
