2nd Balochistan Invention to Innovation Summit held in Quetta, 25-26 April 2017

Annual two day “Invention to Innovation Summit” was jointly organized by the University of Balochistan (UoB), Institute for Research Promotion (IRP)with collaboration with numerous institutions including ECOSFfrom 25-26 August 2017 at Quetta, Balochistan- Pakistan. This was the 2nd summit hosted by UoB at Quetta. ECOSF along with other institutes and organizations of Pakistan supports the annual summits organized in four provinces of Pakistan annually. The summit was opened by H.E. Mr. Muhammad Khan Achakzai, Governor of Balochistan province. In his speech, the Governor appreciated the organizers to organize “such a wonderful event in Univeristy of Balochistan which rarely get chance to host such kind of events”.
The summit highlighted the importance of local technologies for knowledge economy of Pakistan and provided an opportunity for linkages and technology transfer between academia, industry and government. The objectives of the summit were to promote, disseminate, expand and advance the viable research technologies. The features of the summit were Presentation of Viable Technologies through Technical Sessions; Exhibition of Academic & Industrial Innovative Products/Models; Exhibition of innovative product/technology/idea by university students; Workshops on Research Commercialization; Business Plan Competition and Annual Innovation Awards.
ECOSF was represented by its Assistant Director, Mr. Ghulam Abbas in the summit. He witnessed various stalls ranging from handicrafts to medicine, educaiton, technology, R&D, etc, established in the summit and attended different sessions. Mr. Abbas also participated in the session titled; “Trust Building Measures between Academia, R&D Institutions, Industry and Society” and made a presentiaon. The title of his presentation was “ECOSF for S&T Support and Regional Integration”. In his presentation, Mr. Abbas gave an introduction of ECOSF and its aims and objectives. He informed the participants that ECOSF is an intergovnernental organization of ten countries, thus, ECOSF can facilitate collaboration/linkages between R&D, academia, industry, business entitites, etc of the member countries. He highlighted that ECO region has huge potential in energy resources which can be tapped with the support of ECOSF. In the presentaiton, it was shared that for creating science oriented society, the Foundation has been working on implentation of Inquiry Based Science Education (IBSE) approach for teaching Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in schools of ECO countries. The “Application Idea to Reality (AppIdea2R” contest for youth and other programmes of the Foundation were also touched upon in the presentation.
The summit was closed by the Vice Chancellor of the University Prof. Dr. Javed Iqbal who appreciated all the organizers, supports, volunteers for making a successful event. During the summit, various awards were given. ECOSF also awarded a cash prize of Rs.25000/- in the category of water (SDG) in the summit.
