President ECOSF visited the Government College University Lahore

Prof. Seyed Komail Tayebi visited Government College University (GCU) Lahore on August 15, 2023. He was convivially welcomed by the Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Syed Asghar Zaidi for his maiden visit to the university. President ECOSF was accompanied by Manager (Admin) Ghulam Abbas Rahar.

The Vice Chancellor GCU made an introduction of the University and said that in 1864, Government College was established by the British government in India.  After being elevated to university status in 2002, it has advanced into one of the top ten largest institution in Pakistan, with a student body of over 12,000, he added. He also said that it has 32 academic departments, segregated into five faculties, five research centers, focused on academic and industrial research and development projects. It has the highest graduation rate in the country, with an average of 94.6% annually. He also shared that the University has established a Persian center to promote and teach Persian in Pakistan. The students all over Pakistan, Iran and other countries enrolled to learn Persian.

Prof. Seyed Komail Tayebi thanked the Vice Chancellor for warmly welcoming in the university and said that it was a great pleasure to visit one of the oldest and greatest historical university of sub-continent. Prof. Tayebi also briefly introduced the VC about ECOSF and said that the Foundation was established in 2013 as an intergovernmental organization of ten regional countries and a specialized agency of Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO). The Foundation promotes and supports the activities of Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) leading to economic development in ECO region. He further said that Foundation has been working on different programmes such as Climate Change, Inquiry Based Science Education (IBSE), Green Universities, Economics of the Region, Engineering Qualification Standardization, E-learning and many other fields of science in the region.

Prof. Zaidi appreciated the role of ECOSF and desired joint collaborative activities in Pakistan and ECO region. Prof. Tayebi who is an economist, proposed that the joint collaboration can be initiated with organization of a webinar with the title of “Impacts of Aging Population in ECO region” which was agreed by the VC as he is also an economist and possesses a diverse experience in the field of Economics, and his interest in economic issues of aging.

Later, the delegation also visited the Persian center of the university. Being the Persian origin Prof. Tayebi took keen interest in the center and admired the establishment of the center. He hoped, the center will attract more people to learn and understand Persian language.

The visit was ended with vote of thanks from both side and commitment to collaborate.
