ECOSF Participated in the 1st International Conference on Social Sciences and Information-Communication Technologies (ICSIST-2018) organized by SAU Tandojam February 20-21, 2018

Sindh Agriculture University (SAU) Tandojam in collaboration with Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan organized the 1st International Conference on Social Sciences and Information-Communication Technologies (ICSIST-2018) at the university on February 20-21, 2018. The International Conference brought together leading academicians and researchers to review the current and emerging issues in Social Sciences and Information & Communication Technologies (ICTs) that affect the industries, environment and consumers through presentation and discussion in plenary, oral and poster sessions as well as informal gatherings. The conference was opened by the Sindh Minister for Health Dr. Sikandar Ali Mandhro on 20th Feb; while, Dr. Sikandar Ali Shoro, Special Assistant to Chief Minister, Sindh for Information Technology was the Chief Guest in the Closing on 21st Feb.. President ECOSF Prof. Dr. Manzoor H. Soomro was also invited as Guest of Honour in the Closing ceremony.

The Vice Chancellor SAU, Prof. Dr. Mujeeb uddin Memon while speaking in the closing appreciated the active participation of the delegates and researchers.  He also appreciated the efforts of panel members, partners and the dignitaries for their time and support to the event. Prof. Dr. Memon affirmed that “it is a golden opportunity for us to extend our knowledge in information and communication technology as well as Social Science through the networking amongst the experts”. ICSIST-2018 provided an ideal platform for researchers, academicians and industry players to share their expert knowledge in this area, he added. He also thanked the Special Assistant to the Chief Minister and the Preseident of ECOSF for their encouragement by joining the conference.

President ECOSF, Prof. Dr. Manzoor H. Soomro in his speech congratulated the Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Mujeeb uddin Memon and his team for their efforts for organizing the 1st International Conference on Social Sciences and Information-Communication Technologies 2018 and making it a successful event. He admired the progress made by the SAU and its contributions during the last three years especially towards the SDGs by engaging faculty and students in farmers’ advisory services in the province of Sindh.  He also appreciated in the university leadership for establishing effective international linkages and collaborations with other countries, such as China and Germany. Prof. Soomro highlighted the importance of ICTs and potential benefits of these technologies in present and in future in the real world with particular reference to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Robotics in farm technologies and 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). There is a great potential and applications of ICTs to respond to various current challenges in the region, he said.

Prof. Dr. Soomro also briefly introduced the ECOSF and its flagship programs for promotion of STI based economic development in the ECO region. Prof. Soomro shared that ECOSF has established strategic partnerships with world’s leading organizations and development of its flagship programs including, Inquiry Based Science Education (IBSE), Engineering Qualification Standardization as well as ICT promotion by engaging youth in its programmes. ECOSF supports the Innovations in Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education, he added. Prof. Dr. Soomro said the ECOSF is actively supporting and promoting the concept of community colleges and Science & Technology Parks and concept of Green and Sustainable campuses in the ECO region, including Pakistan, and that SAU Tandojam has a great ppotential to go green and establish and Agriculture S&T Parks.

In the end, the Chief Guest Dr. Sikardar Ali Shoro, Special Assistant to Chief Minister, Sindh presented the Shields to the Participants and congratulated the Conference Organizers for arranging this successful event. He shared his views on role of ICTs in the context of sustainable development and stressed over the immense need of more ventures to bring the academia and real stakeholders at one platform for the benefit of society and nurturing the future generations.  He promised to provide stronger access to ICT tools to the university on behalf of Sindh Government.
