Iranian Biology Congress- 2022 at Shahrekord University, Sharekord 31 Aug – 1 Sept

The 22nd National and the 10th International Congress of Biology of Iran with the theme; "Biology for Healthy Living and Sustainable Development" was held from 31st August to 2nd September 2022 at Shahrekord University, Iran. This event included four sub-sets of conferences, namely; Plant Biology, Animal Biology, Cell and Molecular Biology, and Environmental Biology & Conservation.

The aim of this congress was to present researchers' latest scientific research achievements in the country and abroad in various fields of biology. Also to encourage research and technology cooperation with national and international organizations. Venue of the congress- the city of Shahrkord is called the Roof of Iran, as a comprehensive and designated university of Chaharmahal & Bakhtiari Province.

A total of 1050 abstracts were accepted in this congress. Among thsse, 120 abstracts were presented as oral in four above mentioned conferences. International speakers also presented their scientific talks virtually as well as in-person in this congress. Main talks are highlighted below.

  • Role and Programs ECOSF for Sustainable Development in the ECO Region, by Manzoor Hussain Soomro President of ECO Science Foundation (ECOSF).
  • The Chemistry of Life begins with Water: how it forms the basis for our freedom as living organisms, by Prof. Denis Noble from University of Oxford, UK.
  • Molecular Regulation at the Interface between Bone and Endoprosthesis - The Challenge of Aseptic Loosening, by Prof. Jochen Salber from Bochum University.
  • The Cerebrospinal fluid system of the brain: a missing component in understanding development and function of the central nervous system and cerebral cortex, by Prof. Jaleel Miyan from University of Manchester, UK.
  • Lab-on-a-Chip Technology: Where engineering meets Biology, by Dr. Ali Doostmohammadi, from York University, Canada.
  • Breast cancer evolution under the light of tumor microenvironment, by Prof. Mehdi Damghi from Stony Brook University, USA.
  • Targeted Anti-mitochondrial Therapy: The Future of Oncology, by Prof. Babak Behnam from Clinical Biochemical Genetics. Clarksburg, Maryland, USA.
  • The changing paradigm of intron retention: regulation, ramifications and recipes, by Prof. Ulf Schmit from James Cook University, Australia.
  • Fertility of Holstein bulls in Iraq from semen cryopreservation and gene detection point of view, by Prof. Talal A. Abdulkareem, Univ. of Baghdad-Iraq.

The presence of Prof. Manzoor Soomro, the former President of ECOSF and the partial funding of the event by ECO Science Foundation was highly appreciated. In his presentation, Dr. Soomro introduced the Foundation, its aims and objectives and programmes and emphasized on the importance of skilled youth and technology for sustainable development. He highlighted the collaborative programmes especially those of IBSE for STEM education at schools as building blocks for higher education and economic development. He also shared with the congress opening plenary the Belt and Road programmes under BRISEC and the activities of high-end economic development through the ECOSF-BTBU (Beijing Technology and Business University) Joint Training Center established at BTBU with the funding of China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), an important partner of ECOSF. He appreciated to see participation of some of the pioneers of Iranian biology, such as; Prof. Qureshi Al-Husseini and other prominent professors in the field of biology as a great honour of Shahrekord University.

Also, on the sidelines of the conferences, specialized scientific panels were held on four different themes including: Evaluation of Challenges in Biology Education, Bio-economy and Entrepreneurship in biology, Biology for healthy living and sustainable development, and Environmental issues and strategies at Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province.
