Collaborative Endeavors in Disaster Ris k Reduction - A Visit by Chinese Disaster Risk Professionals to ECOSF

A delegation of esteemed Chinese Disaster Risk Professionals recently visited the ECO Science Foundation (ECOSF) to engage in discussions on disaster risk reduction and related initiatives. The delegation comprised:

  1. Han Qunli, Director Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR)
  2. Lian Fang, Science Officer, IRDR
  3. Hong Tianhua, Executive Director, China-Pakistan Joint Research Centre on Earth Sciences Islamabad.

The delegation was warmly welcomed by Prof. Seyed Komail Tayebi, President of ECOSF, during their visit. The meeting was attended by Dr. Ghulam Muhammad Memon, Executive Director, and Advisor Prof. Manzoor H. Soomro and other staff members of the ECOSF. Prof. Tayebi appreciated the important role China in enhancing the Science, Technology and Innovation in the Belt and Road Countries. Prof. Tayebi further underlined that China is a role model for innovative governance, socio-economic growth and people centric approach for many developing countries in the new era of the World Economy. 

Engr. Khalil Raza, Programme Manager for Energy and Climate at ECOSF presented an insightful overview of ECOSF, outlining its various programs and the dedicated resources it has developed to address Climate Change Mitigation and Disaster Risk Reduction across the ECO Member Countries.

Prof. Han Qunli, the Director of Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR) delivered a comprehensive presentation on the pivotal role of IRDR. He introduced IRDR as an international scientific program co-sponsored by the International Science Council (ISC) and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), with support from the China Association of Science and Technology (CAST).

The mission of IRDR as highlighted by Prof. Han Qunli is to mobilize science for the reduction of all types of disaster risk. This involves building resilience, reducing vulnerability, and integrating risk science with climate change adaptation and mitigation, along with sustainable development. The presentation emphasized the importance of promoting a better understanding of disaster risk and utilizing risk science effectively in decision-making processes.
